Vermont pays a $50,000 death benefit to the beneficiaries of a Vermont National Guard service member killed while serving on state active duty, or who dies as a result of injuries received while mobilized. The death, or the injuries that caused it, must have happened in the line of duty.

Contact the Vermont National Guard and the Vermont Office of Veterans Affairs at 888-666-9844 or 802-828-3379 to file for the death benefit.

What you'll need

The service member’s state active duty or mobilization orders, the death certificate, a line of duty determination, and proof of your relationship to the service member.

Eligibility

  • You are a named beneficiary of a Vermont National Guard service member
  • The service member was killed while serving on state active duty, or died as a result of injuries received while mobilized
  • The death or the injuries that caused it occurred in the line of duty
