How to apply

There is nothing to file with the state in advance. Claim the exemption on your Vermont return, and ask your employer to stop withholding Vermont tax from your wages.

What you'll need

Your marriage certificate, your service member’s military orders assigning them to Vermont, and proof of the state you were both residents of before the orders.

Eligibility

  • You are married to a service member
  • You and your service member were both nonresidents of Vermont before the military orders
  • You are in Vermont only to be with your service member spouse who is complying with military orders
