Vermont Property Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans and their Survivors

Vermont Office of Veterans Affairs, with the exemption applied by your town listers and municipality
First $10,000 of appraised home value exempt, up to $40,000 where the town has voted to increase it

You can exempt the first $10,000 of your home’s appraised value from Vermont property tax if you are a disabled veteran or an eligible survivor. Your town can vote to raise that exemption to as much as $40,000. It only covers the primary residence you own, so renters do not qualify.

How to apply

Send a completed application, with the documents listed on it, to the Vermont Office of Veterans Affairs at 118 State Street, Montpelier VT 05620-4401, or fax 802-828-5932. For help call 888-666-9844 or 802-828-3379. Your town then applies the exemption to your bill, and how much you get depends on whether your town voted to go above $10,000.

What you'll need

Your VA disability rating letter, VA pension award letter or permanent medical retirement paperwork, proof that you own and live in the home, and a death certificate and proof of relationship if you are applying as a surviving spouse or minor child.

Eligibility

  • You own the home and live in it as your primary residence in Vermont
  • You have a service-connected disability rating of 50 percent or higher from the VA, you receive a non-service-connected disability pension from the VA, you received a permanent medical retirement from the U.S. Armed Forces, or you are the unremarried surviving spouse or minor child of a veteran who was eligible for the exemption when they died
  • You are not renting the home you live in
  • If your exemption is more than the $10,000 statutory minimum, your town has voted to increase it
