Vermont Property Tax Penalty and Interest Exemption for Service Members During Military Conflict

Local Vermont town clerk and listers in the municipality where the property is located
180-day extension to file property tax with no penalty, fee or interest

You can get an extra 180 days to file your Vermont property tax without penalty, fee or interest if you served in a combat zone, were called to full-time active duty from a reserve component because of a conflict in a combat zone, or were hospitalized for injuries from that service. Your town has to approve the extension.

Check eligibility

How to apply

Contact the town clerk in the town where your property is located and ask for the instructions to request this exemption. This is approved by the municipality, not by the state, so going to the Vermont Department of Taxes first will not get it granted.

What you'll need

Your orders, or medical paperwork if you were hospitalized, showing the qualifying service and when it ended.

Eligibility

  • You own property in Vermont
  • You were a reserve component service member ordered to full-time active duty because of a military conflict in an area designated as a combat zone, you served in an area designated as a combat zone, or you were hospitalized because of injuries received during that qualifying service
  • Your municipality approves the extension
