Vermont State Employment Veterans Hiring Preference

Vermont adds points to your score when you apply for state employment as a veteran or an eligible family member. The preference also lets you apply for jobs that are normally open only to current state employees, and compete for vacancies advertised as "State Promotional Only".

How to apply

Apply for a posted position through the Vermont Department of Human Resources careers webpage and claim the preference with your supporting documents. For questions call the Vermont Recruitment Services Division at 802-828-6700, option 1 then option 4, or email dhr.recruitment@vermont.gov.

What you'll need

Your DD214 showing at least 90 days of active duty and an honorable discharge, plus your VA disability rating letter, marriage certificate or your spouse’s death documentation depending on which preference you claim.

Eligibility

  • You are applying for Vermont state employment
  • You served at least 90 days on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and received an honorable discharge, you are a veteran with a service-connected disability, you are the spouse of a veteran with a total service-connected disability, or you are the unremarried surviving spouse of a veteran
