Veteran and Disabled Veteran Designation on Texas Driver Licenses and ID Cards

Texas Department of Public Safety, Driver License Division
Designation added free; no-fee card if you have a 60 percent or greater rating with VA compensation

You can have "Veteran" or "Disabled Veteran" printed on your Texas driver license or ID card, and your branch of service too, from Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard or Air Force. The designation itself is free when you apply for or renew a card. If you are only adding it outside your renewal period you pay the normal duplicate card fee, and if you have a 60 percent or greater VA disability and receive compensation you get the card with no fee at all.

How to apply

Ask for the designation at a Texas Department of Public Safety driver license office, or apply by mail if you are inside your renewal period. If you are outside your renewal period you have to go in person. If you are out of state, mail the out-of-state renewal application with your paperwork and fee to Texas Department of Public Safety, Central Cash Receiving, PO Box 15999, Austin TX 78761-5999.

What you'll need

An original or copy of one of these: your DD214, DD215, NGB22, a VA disability letter showing your rating percentage, a Texas concealed handgun licence or licence to carry with a veteran designator, or a Veteran ID card. Out-of-state applicants also send proof of Texas residency and, if renewing a driver license, a vision examination form.

Eligibility

  • You received an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions from an active or reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces
  • If you want the "Disabled Veteran" designation, you have a VA disability rating of 50 percent or more, or a 40 percent rating with a lower extremity amputation
