Contact the human resources office of the agency the service member worked for, and the Virginia Department of Human Resource Management, to file for the death benefit.

What you'll need

The federal active duty orders, casualty documentation or report of casualty, the death certificate, proof of the service member’s state employment, and proof that you are a named beneficiary.

Eligibility

  • You are a beneficiary of a Virginia state employee who died
  • The employee was serving in a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces
  • The employee was ordered to federal active duty
  • The employee was killed in action in armed conflict
