Virginia Gold Star License Plate

Immediate family members of a service member who died while serving can get the Virginia Gold Star licence plate, which can be personalised and is available with a disability symbol. Eligible family members are the surviving spouse, parents including adoptive, step and foster parents, children including adoptive and stepchildren, and siblings and half-siblings.

How to apply

Order through the Virginia DMV Gold Star plate ordering page with a completed Virginia DMV Gold Star or Next of Kin License Plate Applicant Certification, or apply in person or by mail.

What you'll need

A completed Virginia DMV Gold Star or Next of Kin License Plate Applicant Certification, plus documentation of the death and of your relationship to the service member.

Eligibility

  • You are registering a vehicle in Virginia
  • You are the surviving spouse, parent, stepparent, adoptive or foster parent, child, stepchild, sibling or half-sibling of the service member
  • The service member was serving on active duty and was killed in the line of duty during World War I, World War II or any period of armed conflict involving the U.S. before July 1, 1958, or after June 30, 1958 in an action against an enemy of the U.S., in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force, or while serving with friendly forces engaged in an armed conflict in which the U.S. is not a belligerent party, or after March 28, 1973 as a result of an international terrorist attack against the U.S. or a friendly foreign nation or while serving outside the U.S. as part of a peacekeeping force
