Virginia Income Tax Exemption for National Guard Pay

If you serve in the Virginia National Guard in pay grade O-6 or below, you can deduct the Guard pay you receive for up to 39 calendar days of service, or $5,500, whichever is less.

Your Leave and Earnings Statements or W-2 showing your Virginia National Guard pay and the number of days served.

Eligibility

  • You are filing a Virginia income tax return
  • You serve in the Virginia National Guard in pay grade O-6 or below
  • You received Virginia National Guard pay for the tax year
