Virginia Out of State Motorcycle Classification for Service Members and Dependents

Motorcycle classification added by mail for a $20 replacement fee plus $2 per year

If you hold a Virginia driver’s licence but are stationed outside Virginia, you and your family members can add a motorcycle classification by mail instead of coming back to the state. It costs a $20 replacement fee plus $2 per year of motorcycle classification, for up to eight years.

How to apply

Mail your completed Virginia DMV Driver’s License and Identification Application, your documentation and your fees to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, Driver’s License and ID Card Work Center, P.O. Box 27412, Richmond, VA 23269-0001.

What you'll need

A U.S. Armed Forces approved basic motorcycle rider training course certificate, and proof of status: current military orders, a certification letter on U.S. government letterhead signed by a commanding officer or supervisor, or a front-and-back copy of your active duty or dependent ID card.

Eligibility

  • You hold a Virginia driver’s licence
  • You are an active duty service member currently stationed outside Virginia, or the spouse or dependent of one
  • You have completed a U.S. Armed Forces approved basic motorcycle rider training course
