Virginia Real Property Tax Exemption for Veterans with a Total and Permanent Disability Rating

Local Virginia county, city or town tax office (commissioner of the revenue or assessor)
Full exemption from real property tax on your principal residence and up to one acre of land

Your home can be completely exempt from Virginia real property tax if the VA rates you 100 percent service-connected total and permanently disabled, or rates you individually unemployable. The exemption covers the home that is your principal residence and up to one acre of the land it sits on.

How to apply

Apply through the commissioner of the revenue or the assessor for the county, city or town where the home is, not through the state. Ask them what proof they want and when they need it, because filing practice varies between localities.

What you'll need

Your VA Benefit Summary Letter showing a 100 percent total and permanent rating or a rating of individual unemployability, and proof that you own the home and live in it as your principal residence.

Eligibility

  • You are a Virginia resident
  • You own the home and live in it as your principal residence
  • You have a service-connected 100 percent total and permanent disability rating from the VA, or a rating of individual unemployability
