Vital Statistics Records and Certified Copies of Minnesota Veterans’ Records

Minnesota state and county record custodians, with County and Tribal Veterans Service Officers
Certified copies provided free of charge

You get a certified copy of a birth certificate, death certificate, marriage license, divorce decree, dissolution of marriage record, or a veteran’s discharge record free of charge when you need it for a claim for benefits.

How to apply

Ask the Minnesota office that holds the record for a certified copy and say it is for a veterans benefits claim. A County or Tribal Veterans Service Officer can request it on your behalf.

What you'll need

Your DD214 and identification, plus documentation that the record is needed for a benefits claim.

Eligibility

  • You are an honorably discharged veteran, or the surviving spouse or next of kin of one, or an authorized veterans service officer
  • You need the certified copy for a claim for benefits
