Washington State Gold Star License Plate

First set of plates fee exempt for a surviving spouse, parent or adult who filled a parental role

You can get a Washington Gold Star licence plate if you are an immediate family member of a service member who died while serving or as a result of their service. Eligible family members are the surviving spouse, biological, adoptive and stepparents, an adult who filled a parental role such as a foster parent, kinship provider or caretaker relative, a biological or adopted child, and a sibling. The first set of plates is exempt from licensing fees for the surviving spouse, parents and adults who filled a parental role.

How to apply

Request a Gold Star License Plates Request for Certification Letter from the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs as proof of eligibility, then apply as normal at a vehicle licensing office or by mail. The submission and documentation requirements are on the certification form.

What you'll need

A WDVA certification letter, plus the documentation listed on the certification form, which will include proof of the death and of your relationship to the service member.

Eligibility

  • You are a resident of Washington State
  • You are the surviving spouse, a biological, adoptive or stepparent, an adult who fulfilled the parental role, a biological or adopted child, or a sibling of the service member
  • The service member died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, or died as a result of their service
