West Virginia Disabled Veteran Homestead Property Tax Credit

West Virginia Tax Division, with property valuation through the local county assessor
Income tax credit equal to the property tax you paid on your homestead

If you have a combined VA disability rating of 90 percent or more, you can claim a credit on your West Virginia income tax return for the property tax you paid on your homestead. A homestead is a single family home, including a mobile, manufactured or modular home, together with the surrounding land. If you own more than one property the credit applies only to the one you primarily live in. A surviving spouse of an eligible veteran can claim the credit.

How to apply

You still pay your property taxes as normal, then claim the credit when you file your West Virginia personal income tax return. Contact the county assessor where the property is located for property questions, or call a Taxpayer Services Representative at 304-558-3333 or 800-982-8297, or email taxhelp@wv.gov.

What you'll need

Your DD214 showing an honorable discharge, your VA rating letter showing a 90 percent or greater combined rating, your property tax receipts for the year, and proof that the home is your primary residence.
