No-cost burial for veterans; $780 for the burial of an eligible spouse or child

The state veterans cemetery in Institute, West Virginia provides a final resting place for service members, veterans and their eligible family members. Burial for an eligible veteran costs nothing and includes a grave site or niche, opening and closing services, a pre-set crypt, a headstone or niche cover, and perpetual care. There is a $780 fee for the burial of an eligible spouse or child.

What you'll need

Your DD214 or other discharge paperwork, and a marriage certificate or dependent documentation for family members.

Eligibility

  • You were discharged from active duty under conditions other than dishonorable, died while serving on active duty, served at least 20 years in the National Guard or Reserves and qualified for military retired pay or would have but for death before age 60, or were a reserve component member activated for federal service
  • Your spouse and dependent children qualify through you, with dependent children limited to unmarried children under 21, under 23 if a full-time student at an approved institution, or a child who developed a lifelong disability before age 21
