Gold Star Family plate

Immediate family members of a service member killed in the line of duty can get a West Virginia Gold Star Family license plate. Immediate family means the surviving spouse, parents including stepparents, adoptive parents and foster parents standing in loco parentis, siblings and half-siblings, and children including stepchildren and adopted children.

How to apply

Complete the West Virginia Gold Star Family License Plate Application, have it certified by a West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance benefits office, and submit it to the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles.

What you'll need

The service member’s casualty documentation or death certificate, and proof of your relationship to them.

Eligibility

  • You are a West Virginia vehicle owner
  • You are an immediate family member of a service member killed in the line of duty
  • The service member was killed during World War I, World War II, or any U.S. armed conflict after World War II and before July 1, 1958, or after June 30, 1958 while in action against an enemy of the United States, in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force, while serving with friendly foreign forces in armed conflict against an opposing force when U.S. Armed Forces were not involved, or in other recognized operations
