Some West Virginia military and veteran license plates come with no registration fee, though other fees may still apply. The exemption covers the Disabled Veteran, Purple Heart, Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, Air Force Cross and Pearl Harbor survivor plates. An unremarried surviving spouse can keep using the plate until they remarry, fail to renew it, or die.
Apply for the specific plate through the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles. The West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance must certify your application, so contact a WVDVA benefits office for certification first.
Official documentation proving you qualify for the specific plate, such as your DD214, award citation or VA rating letter, and WVDVA certification.
