West Virginia Tuition and Fees Waiver for Surviving Spouses and Children of Service Members Killed in the Line of Duty

West Virginia public colleges and universities, through their admissions offices
Tuition and fees waived for up to eight semesters or until you complete a bachelor’s degree

If you are the surviving spouse or child of a West Virginia resident service member killed in the line of duty, a state college or university will waive your tuition and fees for undergraduate courses. The waiver runs for up to eight semesters or until you finish a bachelor’s degree, and applies only after all other tuition assistance except student loans has been used.

How to apply

Contact the admissions office at the West Virginia state institution you plan to attend and ask for the waiver for surviving spouses and children of service members killed in the line of duty. File a FAFSA each year as well.

What you'll need

The service member’s casualty documentation or death certificate, proof of their West Virginia residency, proof of your relationship to them, and a completed FAFSA for each year.

Eligibility

  • You are the surviving spouse or child of a West Virginia resident service member
  • The service member was killed in the line of duty on federal or state active duty, or while under official orders in the West Virginia National Guard or the U.S. Armed Forces Reserves
  • You are enrolled full time in undergraduate courses at a West Virginia state institution of higher education
  • You have used all other forms of tuition assistance apart from student loans
  • You keep satisfactory academic progress as defined by your institution
