You can have up to 10 preference points added to your passing entrance exam score when you apply for West Virginia state employment. Five points are added if you served on active duty and were honorably discharged, or if you are a reserve component member who completed more than 90 consecutive days of full-time active duty training. Another five points are added if you received the Purple Heart, which must be listed on your DD214, or if you receive VA compensation for a service-connected disability.
Claim the preference when you apply for a state position and submit a copy of your DD214. For help, call the West Virginia Division of Personnel at 304-558-3950.
A copy of your DD214 for any preference claim, with the Purple Heart shown on it if you are claiming that, or a VA Benefit Summary Letter dated within the last six months if you are claiming a service-connected disability.
