West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance (WVDVA)
Residential care at a 125-bed state veterans home

The state runs a 125-bed home overlooking the Village of Barboursville for veterans who need a place to live. It is not a treatment facility and cannot care for veterans who need daily care or skilled assistance. The home has a nursing department and a contact physician, but all medical treatment is given by the VA Medical Center in Huntington.

What you'll need

Your DD214 showing an honorable or general discharge under honorable conditions, confirmation that you are eligible for VA health care, and the results of the required pre-admission medical tests.

Eligibility

  • You were discharged from active duty with an honorable discharge, or a general discharge under honorable conditions
  • You can move on your own and take care of all your activities of daily living, or your disability prevents employment but does not require skilled nursing care or hospitalization
  • You served at least 12 consecutive months on active duty, unless you were medically discharged earlier for a service-connected injury
  • If you enlisted before September 7, 1980, you served at least 24 consecutive months on active duty or the full period you were called to active duty, unless you were medically discharged earlier for a service-connected injury
  • You are eligible for VA health care
  • You have completed the required pre-admission medical tests
