Wisconsin Veterans and Surviving Spouses Property Tax Credit

Wisconsin Department of Revenue, with eligibility certified by the WDVA through your County or Tribal Veterans Service Officer
Refundable credit for 100 percent of the property taxes paid on your primary residence and up to one acre

You can claim a refundable credit for all of the property taxes you paid on your primary residence and up to one acre of the land it sits on. There are two separate ways to qualify: as an eligible veteran, or as an eligible unremarried surviving spouse. The WDVA certifies that you are eligible, and the credit is then paid through your Wisconsin income tax return.

How to apply

First ask your County or Tribal Veterans Service Officer for a Veteran’s Residency Affidavit, which you cannot apply without. Then follow the WDVA information and instructions booklet to submit your documents, and claim the certified credit on your Wisconsin income tax return.

What you'll need

A Veteran’s Residency Affidavit from your County or Tribal Veterans Service Officer, your DD214, your VA rating decision or award letter showing a 100 percent rating or individual unemployability, proof that you own and live in the home, your property tax bill, and for a surviving spouse a marriage certificate, the veteran’s death certificate and your DIC award letter if you are claiming on that basis.

Eligibility

  • You paid property tax on the Wisconsin home you live in as your primary residence
  • You are an eligible veteran, or the unremarried surviving spouse of an eligible veteran
  • If you are claiming as a veteran, you served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, received an honorable discharge, and were a Wisconsin resident when you entered or reentered active duty or for any five consecutive years after entering active duty
  • If you are claiming as a veteran, you have a 100 percent service-connected disability rating from the VA, or you are rated individually unemployable and are eligible for compensation at the 100 percent rate
  • If you are claiming as an unremarried surviving spouse, the veteran was a Wisconsin resident at the time of death and either had a 100 percent service-connected disability rating or an individual unemployability rating paid at the 100 percent rate, or you receive Dependency and Indemnity Compensation from the VA
