Wisconsin Veterans Assistance Subsistence Aid Grant

Local Wisconsin County or Tribal Veterans Service Office, with the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs
Up to $3,000 in any consecutive 12 months, with a $7,500 lifetime limit

You can get short-term cash help when illness, injury or a natural disaster costs you your income and no other aid is available. Grants are awarded for any 30-day period up to a maximum of three months, cannot exceed $3,000 in any consecutive 12 months, and are limited to $7,500 over your lifetime.

How to apply

Apply through a WDVA County or Tribal Veterans Service Officer, who submits the subsistence aid application for you, no later than 12 months after the loss of income. For questions, email DVAMBCOVetsBenefitsGrants@dva.wisconsin.gov.

What you'll need

Your DD214, proof that you live in Wisconsin, documentation of the illness, injury or natural disaster and the income you lost, your household income and liquid asset information, and evidence that no other aid is available.

Eligibility

  • You are a Wisconsin resident veteran as defined in Wisconsin Statutes 45.01(12)(a) to (k)
  • You lost income because of illness, injury or a natural disaster and no other sources of aid are available
  • You apply within 12 months of the verified loss of income
  • Your household income is at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines
  • You do not have six months of liquid assets and income available to meet your basic needs
