No charge for the burial plot or grave vault

You can be buried at the state veterans cemetery in Evansville with no charge for the burial plot or grave vault; plots are assigned first come, first served, and your family pays all other funeral expenses. Services are held in the chapel and patio area on weekdays only, with none at the grave site, and only flat granite markers provided by the federal government may be used. Eligible dependent children are unmarried children under 21, or under 23 if they are full-time students at an approved school, or a child who developed a lifelong disability before age 21.

How to apply

Call the cemetery at 307-235-6673 to arrange a burial or ask about eligibility in advance. The director can also help your next of kin arrange military funeral honors.

What you'll need

The veteran DD214 or other discharge document, the death certificate, and for a spouse or dependent, a marriage certificate or birth certificate showing the relationship.

Eligibility

  • The veteran was discharged from active duty under conditions other than dishonorable, or died while serving on active duty, or served at least 20 years in the National Guard or Reserves and is eligible for military retired pay, or served in a reserve component and was activated for federal service
  • You are the veteran, or the spouse or dependent child of an eligible veteran
