Amputation of the entire leg, including removal at or through the hip joint.
To support a rating at either level, medical records that clearly describe the extent of the amputation are the most direct evidence. Operative reports and surgical notes showing exactly what was removed — the femur, the intrinsic pelvic musculature, and whether any pelvic bones were taken — are what separate the 90% level from the 100% level. Imaging such as X-rays or CT scans can also document the level of bone loss.
For the 90% level, records need to show complete removal of the femur and pelvic musculature without removal of pelvic bones. For the 100% level, records must show that a portion of the pelvic bones was also removed along with the femur and musculature.
If you have residual conditions affecting the bowel or bladder, separate medical records documenting those symptoms and their connection to the amputation would support additional ratings under other diagnostic codes.
Conditions that are often caused or made worse by this one. If you have any of these, they may be claimable as secondary service connection.
